3 Tips To Understanding Snail Behavior And Their Diet

Discover the snail behavior and the dietary habits(what snails eat) of snails based on their habitat – from herbivorous garden snails to aquatic snails feeding on plants and algae. Explore their role as detritivores, enriching soil nutrients.

Remember the common adage “we are what we eat”? Same applies to snails. The habitat of a snail influences its feed pattern; that is why terrestrial (land) snails eat different food variety compared to the aquatic (water) snails. For instance, garden snails are typically herbivores, consuming fresh leaves, stems, bark and crops such as mushrooms, berries, lettuce etc. Interestingly, younger snails are often the most voracious eaters.

Understanding snail behavior is essential for various reasons. Firstly, it helps us comprehend their ecological role and impact on ecosystems. Snails play a crucial part in nutrient cycling by breaking down organic matter, such as decaying leaves and plant debris, and returning essential nutrients to the soil. This process contributes to soil fertility and overall ecosystem health.

Aquatic snails, found in water bodies (like ponds or seas) primarily consume plant matter. This includes floating or submerged plants like duckweed, azolla, water lettuce, seaweed, water hyacinth etc. Additionally, aquatic snails also nibble on algae growing on rocks and submerged logs.

Aside from being herbivores, snails are also detritivores. Detritivores are organisms that feed on the soil’s organic matter and transform it into helpful nutrients needed by plants to grow. So, we can equally say that snails help improve the soil nutrients as they eat up junk from the soil. That’s quite interesting sha!

Now, let’s take a look at snail behavior and what they love to eat.

Understanding Snail Behavior

  • Movement: Snails move using a muscular foot and a layer of mucus, which reduces friction and helps them glide over surfaces. They can move forward, backward, and even upside down. One good thing about their mucus is that; it makes movement seemingly stress less. A snail can move on a sharp razor blade without a cut! ( You don’t believe? Try it out and come back to testify in the next post).
  • Reproduction: Snails are hermaphrodites, possessing both male and female reproductive organs but they still need each other to produce fertile eggs. During copulation, one snail poses as the male while the other poses as the female but both of them will lay eggs.
  • Hibernation: During unfavorable conditions like extreme heat or cold, snails retreat into their shells and hibernate. This helps them conserve energy and survive harsh environments. Hibernation is a form of “sleep” as such, during this period, the snail seize from its activities. It stops feeding, stops growing, stops mating, stops laying eggs, and focuses more on sleeping.

What Do Snails Eat?

1. Plants: Snails are primarily herbivorous, feeding on a variety of plants and vegetables. They consume leaves, stems, flowers, and fruits, making them potential pests in gardens and farms.

2. Algae and Fungi: Some snail species also feed on algae and fungi, scraping them off rocks or surfaces with their radula, a rough tongue-like structure.

3. Calcium Sources: Snails require calcium for shell growth and maintenance. They often consume calcium-rich foods like limestone, eggshells, and even other snails’ shells.

4. Formulated feeds: Feeding snails with skillfully compounded feeds helps boost their growth. Here at NGsnails, we have researched natural plants that help snails grow pretty fast and invented the SHELLOF snail feed. SHELLOF is the best food you should give your snails for fast growth and egg production.

Snail Diet and Ecosystem Balance

Despite their reputation as pests, snails play a crucial role in ecosystems. They contribute to nutrient cycling by breaking down organic matter and recycling nutrients back into the soil. Additionally, they serve as a food source for birds, mammals, and some insects, maintaining a delicate balance in food chains.
