From Research to Revolution: 12 Years of Redefining Snail Farming in Nigeria

The story of how one researcher's curiosity became West Africa's most innovative snail farming enterprise.

In 2013, while most people saw snail farming as a backyard hobby, our founder saw a national challenge waiting to be solved.

Nigeria was importing over 2,000 tons of snails annually—spending precious foreign exchange on a delicacy we could produce right here. But there was a problem: local snails were smaller, less consistent, and often contaminated with parasites. The market preferred imported varieties from the neighbouring countries.

That’s when the research began.

For six years, our founder experimented relentlessly:

  • Testing different species: Archachatina marginata ovum, Achatina fulica, and various hybrids
  • Studying natural snail habitats across Southwest Nigeria
  • Researching the impact of medicinal plants on snail meat quality
  • Developing chemical-free pest and parasite control methods
  • Perfecting year-round production in Nigeria’s tropical climate

The breakthrough came in 2017: the Open-Free Range model.

Instead of confining snails to cramped cages or intensive indoor systems (which stressed the snails and compromised meat quality), why not recreate their natural environment? Allow them to graze freely on carefully selected vegetation, including medicinal plants that naturally boost their immunity and enhance meat flavor.

The results were extraordinary:

  • Healthier snails with 87% survival rates (vs. 60% industry average)
  • Parasite-free meat without using any chemicals
  • Superior taste and texture that restaurants raved about
  • Consistent production even during traditional “off-season” months

In 2019, Nectar Green Snails was officially born—bringing Nigeria’s first commercial Open-Free Range snail farm to life.

The Values That Guide Everything We Do

5 Core Values

EXCELLENCE IN QUALITY

We never compromise on snail health, hygiene, or taste. Every snail that leaves our farm meets the highest standards—because your satisfaction is our reputation.

INNOVATION & RESEARCH

Farming isn't guesswork. We continuously research, experiment, and refine our methods using data, science, and technology to stay ahead of industry challenges.

SUSTAINABILITY

We practice regenerative agriculture that enriches the soil, preserves biodiversity, and produces zero chemical waste. Our grandchildren should inherit better land than we started with.

YOUTH EMPOWERMENT

Agriculture is the future, and young people are Africa's greatest asset. We create opportunities for graduates and aspiring farmers to build dignified, profitable careers in agribusiness.

INTEGRITY & TRANSPARENCY

From pen to package, we maintain complete traceability. Our customers know exactly where their snails come from, how they're raised, and what they're fed.

What Makes us Different

Most snail farms in Nigeria operate the same way: small-scale, cage-based systems with inconsistent supply and quality control issues. We took a different path.

The Open-Free Range Advantage

We’re Nigeria’s first farm to implement true free-range snail farming at commercial scale. Our snails roam naturally in expansive outdoor pens designed to mimic their wild habitat—complete with shade, moisture control, and diverse vegetation.

Now! Snails grow faster, stay healthier, and produce meat with superior texture and flavor.

Medicinal Plant Integration

We cultivated a unique feeding program incorporating medicinal plants like Newbouldia laevis (Akoko), Gongronema latifolium (Utazi), miracle plant, bitter leaf, mints, moringa and pawpaw leaves. These plants naturally boost snail immunity, enhance meat quality, and eliminate parasites—without a single chemical.

Our snails don’t just taste good. They’re genuinely healthier.

Science-Led Farming

Our team includes:

  • Environmental Biologists optimizing habitat conditions
  • Animal Scientists perfecting breeding protocols
  • Molecular Biologists studying snail genetics and disease resistance
  • Plant Specialists developing organic feed formulations
  • IoT Engineers implementing smart monitoring systems

We don’t guess. We measure, analyze, and optimize.

Integrated Farming System

Nothing goes to waste:

  • Snail excreta enriches our vegetable gardens
  • Vegetable trimmings feed the snails
  • Rainwater harvesting irrigates the farm
  • Snail shells help in soil amendments

We are Sustainable. Circular. Profitable.

Those snails are huge and very meaty. My mum was shocked that we can still get these massive sizes around.
